I wasn’t able to actually go to Target because I live on campus and I don’t own a car. Here are some things that I found on their website.
Even though the design is simple and easy, it still says a lot. With the bright orange sticking out, catching the eye immediately. Genius when it comes to consumerism, by catching the customers eye quickly and efficiently, it is one step closer to bringing them in for the kill. (By kill I mean buying it). The shape of the bottle also helps it sell as well. It is easy to pick up and not very heavy. The mixture of colors on the front helps bring the attention away from the bright orange back in to the logo itself. Brand awareness is very important with products like this.
From this artifact, the first thing that stands out is its association with movie characters. The next interesting thing is its attention to detail, each action figure was carefully crafted to look exactly like the corresponding characters within the movies. The design aspects are through the roof with these action figures. It ties in to consumerism perfectly, simply because it is from a popular movie that kids love. Therefore they beg their parents for them until they buy it. Not only does it have that aspect but it is also heavily influenced by the media. Star wars made billions of dollars, a lot of that had to do with the hype of the media behind it.
The design process of this product was simple. How can we make this object so simple that every kid in the world knows what it is when they see it. It is clear to everyone what it is, an easter designed pez dispenser. The most obvious part of this product is the consumerism aspect. Easter is coming up and therefore everything that is worth anything will have easter themed products. Pez is just hopping on the bandwagon, it is how companies that sell products like candy make their money. They all follow trends through different holidays, whether its hearts at valentines day or eggs during easter, definitely the best way to market candy!
This book case may look simple but in reality it was designed and crafted very carefully. Not only does it have to look presentable and nice, but it has to set itself a part from the million of other bookcases that are made by different companies every year. By making sure every corner was perfect and each level of the bookcase is equal there was a lot more thought process that went in to this than one would think. It doesn’t need much marketing or advertising because it is a household product that people tend to use everyday whether it is just for show or to actually put books on it.
Finally, this Cincinnati Bengals lamp is a perfect example of three components. It is designed perfectly to fulfill the need of Bengals fans decor. It has a unique design that not only displays the bengals logo, but also fits the nfl logo. This is perfect for consumerism for that reason as well. Fans of the team and the nfl can appreciate the effort put in to design this lamp. They will not only buy it because it is a lamp, but they will buy it because it represents something they care about. Which is exactly what consumerism is. Besides that, the media influence is huge. By having the bengal logo and the nfl logo, this lamp has easy marketing every day.
